National Army Museum Alfred Munnings

Two new exhibitions focusing on equine artist Sir Alfred Munnings and the British hussars have opened at the National Army Museum.

The two new exhibitions, Alfred Munnings: War Artist, 1918 and Call in the Cavalry, will run at the museum until March and June.

Available to view together for the first time in a century, Alfred Munnings’ wartime paintings are currently on display at the museum as part of the new exhibition on his work, running until March.

Elsewhere in the museum, groups can explore a free exhibition, Call in the Cavalry, to discover the history of the British hussar regiments until June.

Further information on the new exhibitions

The exhibition, Alfred Munnings: War Artist, 1918, contains paintings covering equine subjects, portraiture and pastoral landscapes, that highlight the role of horses in military operations and cover war-affected landscapes of France.

The new major exhibition will be housed at the museum until 3rd March 2019 and will feature over 40 original paintings by Sir Alfred Munnings.

The new Munnings exhibition will be complemented by a series of events taking place in January.

Among the January events is a talk by Dr Jonathan Black and Brough Scott MBE on Sir Alfred Munnings’ early life and career (9th January) and a curator tour, taking place on 23rd January, of the Alfred Munnings: War Artist, 1918 exhibition.

Call in the Cavalry is a free temporary exhibition, on until 9th June 2019, which looks at the shared heritage between the Hungarian and British hussars.
Displays will teach visitors about the histories, the distinctive uniforms, the cavalry charges they have taken part in, and the traditions of the hussars.
