Three Herefordshire farming families – White Heron Estate, Frome Valley Vineyards and 1276 Wines, have launched the Ancient Roots, Fresh Vintage package to showcase the county’s ancient lands.
Groups will start with breakfast at the White Heron Estate before being taken to Frome Valley Vineyard, one of the first to be planted in the area. Lunch is at 1276 Wines – named because the Bishop of Hereford was said to have recorded in his ‘Red Book’ the planting of vines on the south facing slopes of Ledbury - before returning to White Heron, which was founded in 1876.
Members will be taken on eBike tour and be treated to an ‘off-grid’ vine-dining dinner against a spectacular backdrop. The midweek package includes two-nights’ accommodation at White Heron Estate or groups can also opt for day visits touring the three sites.
The tours will be running in May, July, September and October next year (with some availability for September and October dates this year).
Jo Hilditch, from the White Heron Estate, said: “Our family has farmed this estate for 150 years, and planting vines is the latest chapter in a long story of evolution. It is a joy to share it alongside two neighbouring families who care as deeply about the land as we do.”
Family heritage of wine
Records of grape vines in Herefordshire date back to the 13th century. Laura Bailey from 1276 Wines said: “There is something magical about making wine where vines have grown since 1276. Sharing that over a long lunch, straight from the tank, is exactly how it should be enjoyed, gentle, and among people who have just spent the morning in the vines.”
Although English wine is young in comparison to other countries, it has recently become acclaimed for its bright and fresh flavours as a result of the warmer climate.
Frome Valley Vineyards, sustainably farmed on the banks of the river Frome, grows ‘heritage’ English varieties of grapes - Bacchus, Madeleine Angevine, Huxelrebe and Reichensteiner. Its range now includes white, red, sparkling, cider, perry and brandy.
Planted in 2007 on a 13th century site, 1276 Wines, produces sparkling, still and ice wines – created with frozen grapes allowing for more concentrated juice. With every vintage shaped by the season, 1276 Wines prides itself on preserving the purity, balance and personality of the fruit.
White Heron Estate has celebrated a milestone this year, having achieved 150 years of family farming. Since 2020, they have been known for supplying blackcurrants to Ribena, the main provider of British Cassis and Framboise, and keeping the Kir Royals flowing all year round.
