We chat to Belvoir Castle tour guide Ruth Grant to find out about working at the historic castle and the best things for groups to discover.

What is the best thing about working at Belvoir Castle?

I love coming to such a beautiful historic castle every day, being part of preserving its heritage and sharing its fascinating stories with visitors.

What would you say to tempt groups into a visit?

Belvoir Castle works so well for group tours because there is something for everyone including castle tours, exploring the gardens and grounds, enjoying a lovely afternoon, meeting new friends in the Animal Park or looking for the perfect gift in the Retail Village. There’s so much to fit into one day, you’ll want to visit again.

Each room in the castle has its own story to tell – from one of the first cantilevered staircases in Europe to the impressive portrait of Henry VIII in the Picture Gallery.

When is the best time of year to visit?

There are so many seasonal activities at Belvoir Castle that it’s hard to choose. If you come in spring, the gardens are full of new life. In summer, there are lots of outdoor events to enjoy. In autumn, the castle is very cosy and atmospheric. In winter, the castle transforms in a magical Christmas wonderland.

How do you help groups with the booking process?

We like to have a personal approach when booking group tours. From featured tours of the castle and gardens to added extras like afternoon tea or a visit to the Retail Village, we work with group booking teams to build trips that are truly special and memorable.

What is one fact about Belvoir Castle that might be a surprise?

People are always surprised to hear that Afternoon Tea was invented at Belvoir Castle. During the 19th century, the visiting Duchess of Bedford thought the wait between lunch and dinner was too long and asked for sandwiches, cakes and tea to be brought to her and created a whole new British tradition along the way.

Are there any events or exhibitions coming up in 2026 that groups should look out for?

There are so many exciting events and exhibitions in 2026, including the return of the Flower & Garden Show but the one I’m most excited about is the Royal Geographic Society Earth Photo exhibition.

Opening in the spring in the Rose Garden, the exhibition will feature breathtaking nature photography from the Earth Photo Award.
