Ightham Mote is a perfectly preserved moated manor house in Kent, where groups can journey through 700 years of history, from medieval beginnings to the present day.

A National Trust property that is perfect for groups, the core building dates from the 1340s, and a series of alterations and additions were made in the late 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. A moat surrounds the four wings of the house, which in turn is built around an open courtyard.

Externally it shows little sign of change, but when it came to interior decoration, successive generations responded to each new fashion as it came along. The house is also full of stories of a once-cherished family home, with each owner leaving their legacy.

Gardens and grounds for groups to explore

In the garden there are small, formal courtyard gardens, lawns and borders leading to more open and relaxed areas of planting and woodland. There are also streams and lakes fed by natural springs, an orchard, and a recently reinstated walled garden.

The wider estate offers walks with secret glades and countryside views, as well as carpets of bluebells in spring. Maps of suggested routes are available from the Visitor Centre.

Enhancing your group visit to Ightham Mote

Complimentary introductory talks take place on a daily basis when the house is open (28th February 2026 to 3rd January 2027), and there are often free garden tours taking place too.

The Mote Café is open daily for drinks, snacks and light lunches while the gift shop offers souvenirs, homeware, food and locally made gifts.

A group visit to Ightham Mote can be enhanced with a private tour of the house. One of our knowledgeable guides leads the tour, which takes place before the house opens to other visitors. They unlock the story of the house and give an insight into the lives of some of its former residents.

Located six miles north of Tonbridge and seven miles from Sevenoaks, to enjoy all that Ightham Mote has to offer, it is recommended to allow 2.5 hours for a visit.
