Blackpool Pleasure Beach has announced the official opening date of its much-anticipated new rollercoaster, ICON, as Friday 25th May.

ICON soars through the lift hill of the famous Big One rollercoaster

The new £16.25m ride will reportedly be the UK’s first ever double-launch rollercoaster, and will see riders in an open seat with their arms and legs free.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Blackpool Pleasure Beach managing director, Amanda Thompson OBE, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed with calls and e-mails from people all over the world wanting to know when ICON will open to the public.

“I’m so excited to be able to answer and confirm 25th May! We can’t wait to invite those who dare to ride to Blackpool to experience this truly incredible ride. ICON promises to set hearts racing.”

What to expect from a ride on ICON

ICON will propel riders at speeds of up to 85 kilometres per hour during two and a half minutes of thrills. The two powerful thrusts of acceleration are said to only be likened to that felt by Formula 1 drivers.

Over the last 16 months, over 100,000 hours of manpower have been invested in the build, with thousands of tonnes of steel shipped from Germany. The carriages arrived at the amusement park in March, and can already be seen firing around the high-shine track in preparation for the launch.

More at the Pleasure Beach

Groups can pair a ride on the new rollercoaster with so many other attractions at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, including what’s said to be the UK’s tallest rollercoaster, The Big One; the UK’s first looping coaster, Revolution; and Infusion – a suspended looping coaster completely over water.

Those seeking something less scary can enjoy Nickelodeon Land, the Wallace & Gromit’s Thrill-O-Matic, The Alice In Wonderland Ride or the Flying Machines.

Groups are welcome at the attraction; visits can be prebooked by calling the groups department on 0871-222 8787.
