A historic Cumbrian castle with roots stretching back to the Norman Conquest is entering an exciting new chapter, with a range of annual events and group experiences on offer from afternoon teas to guided tours and more.

Located in the village of Greystoke, not far from Penrith in Cumbria, the castle originally opened its doors to visitors in 2023, subsequently welcoming around 10,000 people per year, whilst restoration works commenced on various parts of the building.
The scheduled programme of events will range from private dining experiences to group activities with themed and seasonal days throughout the year.
Owner Tom Nash said: “Visitors never realised we had ponds and moats, now people are noticing these things they’d never been able to see before. We’re lifting the curtain on a place you could only see from the outside.”

What groups can expect
Greystoke Castle’s tour will showcase seven restored bedrooms, access to the tower and attic, as well as entry to its landscaped garden which is available until 28th November 2026. These tours will be open for group bookings between Wednesday to Sunday each week.
There will also be a new exhibition opening in January 2027, for groups to explore the life and legacy of Mary, Queen of Scots through a collection of rare and unusual artefacts, historical displays and captivating stories. Mary, Queen of Scots was the step daughter of Catherine Howard, who grew up in Greystoke Castle.

History of Greystoke Castle
Greystone Castle dates back to the 11th century, with origins tracing back to the Norman Conquest.
While it was originally built as a fortified residence, the castle has predominantly been used as the private residence to the Howard family, more notably home to Catherine Howard, King Henry VIII’s fifth wife.
During the 20th century, the historical estate was even used as a prison camp during World War Two, which led to the significant damage to the building.
Group booking information
Greystoke Castle offers discounted tickets for groups of 20 people or more for select events including Afternoon High Tea, guided tours, medieval re-enactments, live comedy and music shows and open air theatres.
