Luxury hotel barge company European Waterways says its holidays are ideal for small groups and families in search of a private escape.

European Waterways' Magna Carta

Passengers aboard one of the barges, the Magna Carta.

Small groups of up to 12 can book their spot on one of four hotel barges: Magna Carta on the River Thames; Scottish Highlander and Spirit of Scotland on the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness; and Shannon Princess on the River Shannon in Ireland.

Although European Waterways will be taking bookings for the rest of this season, the operator is also welcoming customers for next year too, with all small groups able to take part in a six-night all-inclusive ‘staycation’.

Managing director Derek Banks said: “These luxury barges accommodate just eight to 12 passengers, so our guests are travelling in the safety of small numbers.”

“With these capacities, they are ideal for families and small groups of friends in search of a private escape on a whole barge charter.”

What to expect

All cruise fares include local, private transfers; air-conditioned accommodation in en-suite cabins and locally-sourced gourmet meals cooked by the on-board master chef, all paired with regional wines.

Free on-board amenities such as bicycles and a hot tub are also available, as well as an open bar stocked with wines, spirits and soft drinks, plus private transportation and a guide for all excursions on the itinerary.

Derek Banks continued: “We cruise through peaceful countryside where our guests can savour clean, fresh air and unspoiled views.

“Our daily shore excursions are often exclusive and away from crowds and tourist hotspots, and in most cases, you can start your journey by car or train to our departure points and avoid air travel.”

Keeping safe on your travels

The MD added: “Most importantly to ensure the health and safety of our guests and crew, we have enhanced our already strict hygiene routines, including temperature checks, complete deep cleaning and disinfecting of all cabins and public areas on the barges, as well as shared items such as bicycles.

“All of this will be conducted with minimal impact to guests and without spoiling the relaxed ambience of an intimate hotel barge cruise.”
