The auditorium at The Arts Theatre Cambridge has been redeveloped.

The theatre has been closed since January for the development of a new-look auditorium and backstage area. It will reopen in November following the completion of the first phase.

Rachel Tackley and Victoria Beechey, co-chief executives of The Arts Theatre Cambridge, said: “This season feels like a true awakening… the theatre is not only waking up its stage but stepping confidently into a new chapter.”

The first performance in the new-look theatre is Sleeping Beauty which opens on 27th November. The production stars Matt Crosby as the pantomime dame and runs until 4th January 2026.

Redevelopment project

Phase one of the project has seen the auditorium and backstage areas completely refurfurbished, with new seating installed in a layout designed to improve the view of the stage, whilst a new curved balcony has been designed to help accoustics.

Original finishes have been reinstated to the curved balcony which houses the second tier of seats.

Modern technical and backstage equipment, including air conditioning and lighting systems have been installed and the front entrance has been upgraded to improve visibility and access.

Phase two of the development will see a new 200-seat studio theatre constructed on the building’s roof. The new space will host smaller-scale productions, community events and activities.
