Manchester Opera House has unveiled the casting for this year’s Christmas pantomime, Dick Whittington, which will run from 9th December to 7th January 2018.

John Barrowman will star in the title role of Dick Whittington, while double act The Krankies will play Councillor and Jimmy Krankie.

Dick Whittington – a panto classic

Dick Whittington tells the story of a boy who travels to London seeking fortune and fame. He arrives with no money and is later introduced to a cat who soon becomes his trusty companion. The cat helps Dick in his quest to achieve his riches, and become Lord Mayor of London.

Dick Whittington is produced by Qdos Entertainment and will include, amongst other things, a 3D sequence that will see audiences travel on an adventure alongside the protagonist.

About the cast

John Barrowman’s career has varied from music and presenting performances to television and film. On TV, he has starred as Captain Jack Harness in the BBC’s Doctor Who, which paved the way for the spin-off series, Torchwood, where Barrowman also held the leading role.

On stage, he has starred in Sunset Boulevard, Anything Goes, Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon and Company. Most recently, he is starring as Malcolm Merlyn in US television show, Arrow, based on the DC comic Green Arrow, which is now in its sixth series.

Meanwhile, the Krankies have been entertaining audiences on the cabaret circuit and on television since the 70s, with their career including sold-out performances at theatres across the UK, as well as appearances at the Royal Variety Performance. They also had their own television programmes The Krankies Klub and The Krankies Elektronik Komic and have released two singles.
