About the story
Widely studied in literature in the USA and UK due to its themes of racism, prejudice, and courage, the story features iconic characters, including lawyer Atticus Finch, the wronged Tom Robinson, Atticus’ daughter Scout, her brother Jem, their housekeeper and caretaker Calpurnia, and the reclusive Arthur “Boo” Radley.
Set in 1930s Alabama, To Kill a Mockingbird is a court-room drama that tells the story of successful lawyer, Atticus Finch, who encourages kindness and empathy in his children Scout and Jem, but is pushed to the limits of these qualities himself when he has to defend Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of rape. Finch sets out to uncover the truth in a town that seems determined to hide it.
The novel was inspired by novelist Harper Lee’s own childhood and has sold more than 45 million copies worldwide. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature and was adapted for a 1962 Academy Award-winning film.
The cast for the UK and Ireland tour is yet to be announced.
