Sunny Afternoon, the musical based on the music of The Kinks, will embark on a national tour next year.

The production is already well into its second year in the West End, and the touring production will feature a new cast when it opens at the Manchester Opera House on 19th August.

The show features some of The Kinks’ biggest hits such as You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and Lola.

The plot of Sunny Afternoon is based on the early life of Ray Davies, the lead singer of The Kinks, and how he, alongside the rest of the band, rose to fame.

It’s set against the backdrop of Britain’s conservative 50s and riotous 60s and explores the highs and lows of the band’s journey.

The show will also feature music and lyrics by Joe Penhall and original story by Ray Davies.

Sunny Afternoon’s current West End tour has won a number of awards including Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music at the 2015 Olivier Awards.

The show is directed by Edward Hall and will run until 11th March 2017 at the Bristol Hippodrome. It will also play at venues such as Southend Cliffs Pavillion, Aylesbury Waterside Theatre and Oxford New Theatre.
