Winchester Cathedral has announced a number of developments for the year ahead, set to restore and transform the historic building.
The programme, part-funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will be accompanied by a programme of events suitable for groups.
The restoration
The four-year refurbishment project in the cathedral’s presbytery this spring will see the Medieval windows, high vault and roof bosses (used to hold the ceiling together) gradually revealed and restored to their former 16th-century glory.
The 15th-century Great Screen, the ornate wall behind the alter, is also being cleaned for the first time in over 100 years to expose the ‘true magnificence of this Medieval masterpiece’.
Festivals and events in the 2018
Many events will take place at Winchester cathedral this year, with highlights set to include festivals about stones and flowers.
The Stone Festival, returning to Winchester Cathedral’s historic Inner Close from 15th to 17th June, will give visitors the opportunity to meet some of the UK’s best stonemasons, have a go at carving, and learn more about this ancient art. Special architecture tours of the cathedral can be arranged to enhance group visits.
Winchester Cathedral’s flower festival, meanwhile, will return this autumn from 5th to 9th September, titled Illumination: A Festival of Flowers. Visit the cathedral to see an array of ?ower arrangements inspired by the Winchester Bible, a 12th-century English bible.
Another highlight this year will be a new exhibition. Kings and Scribes, opening in the winter, will be a three-level exhibition space situated in the South Transept, revealing the cathedral’s history whilst offering views across the cathedral.
Three more exhibitions are also expected this year and will tell the story of the cathedral’s rich history, showcasing some of its precious treasures including all four volumes of the aforementioned Winchester Bible.
The year will culminate with the Christmas Market, nestled in the cathedral’s historic Inner Close surrounding an outdoor ice rink with more than 100 chalets selling Christmas gift and delights.
