West End celebration for The Pitmen Painters

Date Posted: 11/07/2011

Lee Hall’s acclaimed production, The Pitmen Painters, is to open at the West End’s Duchess Theatre on the 5th October following a national tour and celebrated seasons at the National Theatre and on Broadway.

Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men who do extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is based on the story of the group of Ashington miners, who in 1934 hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint - prolifically. Within a few years avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collectors; but every day they continued to work, as before, down the mine.

Directed by Max Roberts, The Pitmen Painters will feature many of the actors who starred at the National Theatre and on Broadway. Further casting details have yet to be announced.

Discounted rates are available for groups of eight plus for all performances except for Saturday night. Performance times are Monday to Saturday at 7.30pm, with Thursday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm.
