The Liverpool-based site will open its gates to visitors for the first time in summer 2019.

Strawberry Field View from Gates

The Liverpool-based site, which is famous among many fans of The Beatles, will open its gates to visitors for the first time in summer 2019 and will offer group tours from September.

Strawberry Field was made iconic by John Lennon in The Beatles hit Strawberry Fields Forever.

The site, which is around 15 minutes’ drive from Liverpool city centre, is therefore already a popular tourist attraction, with many people journeying to take their photo outside the gates but it is set to become a true visitor attraction next year.

The new visitor centre will include an authentic interactive exhibition, complete with audio guides that explore the site’s history, John Lennon’s childhood, the writing and the recording of the song.

Visits will include a tour of the garden and woods where John played as a child.

A café and shop will also be on site, offering light refreshments, lunch and early dinner menus, and a range of Strawberry Field merchandise.

Further information on the new visitor attraction

Previously the site of former Salvation Army children’s home, where John Lennon spent his childhood, Strawberry Fields became the inspiration behind the popular song and is still owned and operated by the Salvation Army.

Julius Wolff-Ingham, fundraising and marketing director for The Salvation Army, said: “Strawberry Field will weave together educational, cultural, heritage and spiritual exploration in one bold, imaginative site. It’s going to be a vibrant visitor experience, which we hope will inspire people today as much as the place inspired the young John Lennon.”

Julia Baird, John Lennon’s sister and honorary president of the Strawberry Field project, added: “I am sure that John would have been thrilled that Strawberry Field is to become a bastion of hope for young adults as well as an inspirational visitor experience.”

The new attraction will complement other Liverpool-based Beatles attractions such as The Beatles Story, the Cavern Club and the Magical Mystery Tour.

Group visits

Groups of ten or more must be pre-booked. Group tours will be available from September 2019.

Dedicated staff can assist in organising all aspects of group visits, and group organisers will get free access to the exhibition.

Coach drop-off on site and parking is available nearby.
