A new performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the return of 2018’s As You Like It are on the summer season line-up at Shakespeare’s Globe for 2019.

The programme will see performances of Henry IV, Henry V, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merry Wives of Windsor, As You Like It and Ben Jonson’s play, Bartholomew Fair, played at the Globe this year.

A glance at the summer season schedule

The history plays will open the season with Henry IV part 1 due to take to the stage on the 23rd April. Henry IV Part 2 will then begin on the 25th April, followed by Henry V on 30th April, with all three plays due to conclude on 11th October.

Comedy, Merry Wives of Windsor, will follow when it opens on 17th May, and although casting is still due to be announced, the performance will be broadcast live into cinemas on 20th June.

Shakespeare’s tale of order and chaos, love and fantasy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream will open on 28th June, with a run that will take it up to the 13th October.

Audiences will be able to watch a series of mistaken identities and mishaps take place in popular comedy, As You Like It, when it returns on the 7th August until 21st September.

On the 23rd August, Ben Jonson’s raucous comedy on London life, Bartholomew Fair, will return to the Globe with direction from Blanche McIntyre, who has previously directed The Winter’s Tale, The Comedy of Errors and As You Like It.

Elsewhere, the Globe’s touring ensemble will play out productions of The Comedy of Errors, Pericles and Twelfth Night at venues including Chilham Castle in Kent and the Brighton Open Air Theatre. The tour begins on the 17th May in Kent, with more venues due to be announced.

The theatre is also due to host a day of panel discussions and workshops on 9th March to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Richard Burbage, the most famous actor to perform at the original Globe Theatre, and 100 years since the birth of the founder of Shakespeare’s Globe, Sam Wanamaker.

Other events will include a Woman & Power event in May, and a two week festival commencing 26th June titled Poland is Hamlet, which will celebrate Poland’s affinity with Shakespeare’s work.
