Durham

Durham is a destination full of historic buildings and museums, and County Durham’s newest seasonal campaign invites visitors to delve into the city’s past to make the most of all that’s on offer.

Launching this month, the campaign aims to showcase Durham’s fascinating strand of history which includes a mix of iconic buildings with renowned collections and a programme of events to drive visits, in particular overnight stays.

The campaign will focus on attracting visitors to Durham’s historic offering – outlining Durham’s heritage in all its guises by lighting up the past. The This is History. This is Durham campaign is set to run until September 2018.

Major city highlights

Durham’s historic UNESCO inscribed cityscape is a major draw, with the cathedral, castle and architectural university buildings and seasonal exhibitions in Palace Green Library offering appeal to groups from all over the UK.

Beyond the city lies a wealth of attractions which chart the history of the county’s evolution. Don’t miss a group trip to Beamish, which brings the past to life through open air exhibits, or Raby Castle which boasts a 200-acre deer park, walled gardens and historic collections.

There are also interesting international collections of art and artefacts housed in The Bowes Museum; while the historic market town of Bishop Auckland has a historic castle at its heart plus a new visitor centre.

The return of the historic Kynren event this summer adds to the county’s tourism offering.

Michelle Gorman, managing director at Visit County Durham, said: “We’re delighted to launch our history campaign which will further raise our national profile and attract more visitors to experience our wonderful county – boosting the visitor economy.

“What sets Durham apart are the opportunities to truly experience history in an interactive way, and during 2018 there are even more exciting chances to make your own history with a stay in Durham”.
