Seasonal highlights from the National Trust especially for groups.

This festive season why not treat your group to the magic of Christmas at one of the seasonal events taking place at National Trust properties up and down the country. Warm up with mulled wine, pick up some gifts or get into the Christmas spirit with a spot of carol singing.

Here, we provide a guide to some of the Christmas highlights for groups being hosted by the National Trust.

  • Homemade Christmas Fair
    Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum, Devon
    19th and 20th November

Shop for hand-made Christmas presents in the wintry setting of Arlington Court estate. Find something special from local stall holders, with products from jewellery to jams and shawls to decorations, and take the chance to browse the festive treats on offer in the National Trust shop. After catching up on your Christmas shopping, step into the fantasy world of Narnia, as C.S. Lewis’s classic tale of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is brought to life in the house and grounds in the run up to Christmas day.

  • Victorian Christmas Weekends
    Speke Hall Garden and Estate, Liverpool
    26th and 27th November, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th December

Get into the Christmas spirit at Speke Hall and see the ground floor beautifully decorated for a Victorian Christmas. Enjoy carols in the great hall, festive refreshments, tours, activities and more.

  • Christmas Frost Fair
    Attingham Park, Shropshire
    2nd to 4th December

Avoid the crowded shopping centres this year and make Christmas shopping an enjoyable experience at Attingham Park. Featuring over 100 quality, local craft and food stalls in this beautiful historic setting, it is a great place to find the perfect gift.

  • Christmas at the Abbey
    Buckland Abbey, Devon
    2nd to 23rd December

Join the National Trust for Christmas at Buckland as the abbey is decorated with traditional festive displays including a Victorian kitchen. Fun for all the family in a relaxed atmosphere, on the weekends and daily from 16th December there will be a visit from Father Christmas, along with volunteers in period costume, pomander making, Tudor games and traditional decoration making.

Cost: Normal admission charges apply with the exception of the late night opening on 17th December.

  • A Lantern-lit Christmas
    Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill, Cambridgeshire
    3rd December

Celebrate the magic of Christmas at Anglesey Abbey this December. With longer opening hours for one-night only, there’s plenty of opportunity to browse through the imaginative gifts in the on-site shop and enjoy mulled wine and mince pies. Soak up the atmosphere with festive music then join in the lantern procession at 5pm, when the Winter Garden will be alive with twinkling lights, music and festive spirit.

  • Craflwyn Christmas Fair
    Craflwyn and Beddgelert, Gwynedd

Make your Christmas green, ethical and fun. Craflwyn Christmas Fair gives your group members the chance to source all of their Christmas needs locally, ensuring the best over the festive season.

  • Edwardian Christmas
    Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire
    3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th December

Experience Christmas of a bygone era as you walk through the ground floor of Kedleston Hall decorated in an Edwardian style, with Caesar’s Hall laid out for a festive feast near the great Christmas tree. Santa will be dropping by and bringing his reindeer, while costumed characters will help your group learn about Christmas in times gone by.

  • Christmas Music and Lights
    Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Yorkshire

Get into the festive spirit with a visit to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal’s magical winter wonderland. Enjoy listening to seasonal music in the floodlit Abbey ruins and see the trees twinkling with light.

  • Christmas Fair
    Ham House and Garden, Surrey
    3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th December

The popular Christmas Fair returns to Ham House for 2011. Find exciting and original Christmas gift ideas from the National Trust and from local artisans and traders. The fair takes place in a marquee. There will also be family activities and entertainment in the basement of the house, and the Orangery will be open all day for seasonal refreshments.

  • Carols in the Church
    Lanhydrock, Cornwall
    3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th December

Join local music groups every weekend in December to celebrate Christmas with carols in Lanhydrock’s parish church. Groups should also make time to stop at the largest National Trust gift shop in Cornwall for some Christmas shopping (special late opening on 15th December).

  • Christmas at Wallington
    Wallington, Northumberland

Experience Christmas as it should be at Wallington. Admire the beautiful decorations and enjoy carol singing and seasonal music in the house as you soak up the festive atmosphere. Groups will also have the chance to make festive things, follow the Christmas trail and hear stories told by Mrs Santa.

  • Christmas Carols & Trail
    Cliveden, Buckinghamshire

Come along to celebrate Christmas by joining local school children to sing carols around Cliveden’s outdoor Christmas tree. With hot food and refreshments on offer, the gardens will also be open from 10am for a refreshing winter walk.

  • Christmas Carols at the Mote

  • Christmas at the Apprentice House
    Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate, Cheshire
    14th to 16th December

Witness Christmas as it once was at Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate.
