Bodiam Castle, East Sussex

Whether it’s a Boxing Day stroll at Bodiam Castle or a New Year’s Day ramble around the Scotney Castle estate, there’s plenty to choose from with the National Trust if you’re seeking a walk this winter.

Here, the National Trust recommends its favourite winter walks to enjoy this year in Kent and East Sussex. Don hats, scarfs and wellies and embrace the fresh air on this selection of walking trails.

Scotney Castle, Kent

Take an outsider’s view of this castle’s Medieval ruin from the parkland trail, which loops around the estate. In winter, stark views open up across the moat and up towards the house, giving a different view of the historic landscape.

The parkland trail heads into Kilndown Wood before looping back to Scotney’s house and into the gardens. Don’t forget to pop into the café for a festive treat before you go.

Bodiam Castle, East Sussex

A walk around the moat at Bodiam Castle in winter time offers picturesque views of early morning mist and the water frozen over. Groups can enjoy a seeing what the landscape might have looked like back in the Middle Ages – keep an eye out for the World War Two pill box in the grounds.

Longer walks across the surrounding countryside will take you past the church of St. Giles and into the local village. There are some stiles to tackle on these trails.

Ightham Mote, Kent

Ightham Mote's walk to Shipbourne and Fairlawne is a circular walk beginning with a wander through the ancient Scathes Wood, before taking in views of the Kentish countryside on the way to the neighbouring estate of Fairlawne and on to Shipbourne.

A full circle will bring you back to Ightham Mote and the cosy Mote Café, with warming festive drinks and seasonal treats in store.

Emmetts Garden, Kent

A brisk winter walk can be enjoyed on the Weardale Walk, from Emmetts Garden to neighbouring Chartwell. You’ll be walking in the heart of the Kent countryside, steeped in history with panoramic landmarks to see along the way.

The Weardale Walk is fully waymarked, and passes through the woodland areas of Toys Hill and Hosey Common, as well as the pretty hamlet of French Street. The trail will return you back to Emmetts Garden, passing the Old Stables tearoom back to the carpark.
