Discover what America's music city has to offer groups...

Essential sights

Grand Ole Opry House: No trip to Nashville is complete without a visit to this concert venue. The Grand Ole Opry show started as a radio broadcast in 1925 then moved to the Grand Ole Opry House in 1974 and is now recognised as “the show that made country music famous”. Groups can take backstage tours.

Broadway (Honky Tonk Highway): A dozen bars on either side of this highway blast out music from 10am until 3am. Many of country music’s top names got their start here so you never know which stars of the future you might see. Aim for Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and Robert’s Western World.

Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum: Called the ‘Smithsonian of country music’ this museum has a massive collection of historic video clips, recorded music, costumes and exhibits, its latest being Dylan, Cash and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City. Entry to the museum includes a trip to the legendary Historic RCA Studio B, where Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and the Everly Brothers recorded.

Food and drink

Check out the fish ‘n’ grits or the fried oyster mash at The Southern Steak & Oyster, which offers ‘an authentically southern adventure with a twist’ in the heart of downtown Nashville’s SoBro (south of Broadway) district.

Knock back a whiskey at the Whiskey Bent Saloon or chow down on a Tennessee burger at the Silver Dollar Saloon, both just three blocks from the Ryman Auditorium, with live music and fantastic views of the Cumberland River. Group buffet dinner and live-music packages are available.

Locals have been heading to the Tin Angel for more than 20 years for modern-American cuisine with French, Italian and Latin influences, all served in a restored, historical landmark building.

Best for groups

The Star for a Day: The Ultimate Nashville Tour includes a personally-guided tour of Historic RCA Studio B, in which groups take part in a recording session – standing where Elvis stood – and then visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, before enjoying a barbecue buffet and line-dancing lesson at the world-famous Wildhorse Saloon.

Alternatively, the Iconic Country Trio Package takes in a visit to the Ryman Auditorium (an early home of the Grand Ole Opry), the Johnny Cash Museum – dedicated to the life and history of the Man in Black – and the Grand Ole Opry House backstage tour.

Shoppers should head for the Opry Mills, the largest outlet and value retail shopping destination in Tennessee, with more than 200 retailers and seven full-service restaurants. Or, closer to downtown, Hillsboro Village, a collection of shops, boutiques and restaurants all within a four-block radius.

Where to stay

Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center: As well as being nextdoor to the Grand Ole Opry and the Opry Mills shopping complex, this place offers lush, indoor gardens and cascading waterfalls, an on-site spa and views over the Cumberland River.

Omni Nashville Hotel: You could hardly get a better location than the one occupied by this hotel, which adjoins the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and is within easy walking distance of the Johnny Cash Museum and Honky Tonk Highway.

Holiday Inn Express Nashville Downtown: Well situated near the Ryman Auditorium, Music Row and the entertainment district, this hotel offers complimentary wi-fi, free Express Start breakfast and a seasonal outdoor pool.

Live like a local

Followers of the TV series Nashville will be familiar with the Bluebird Café, a 90-seat, folk-club style venue that highlights songwriters performing (unlike the TV show) in-the-round. Hugely popular, so booking in advance is a must.

Journey Time: With no direct flights from the UK, the flight time varies, depending on the US connection, from ten hours 50 mins to 11 hours 20 mins.
Currency: US dollars.
Best time to go: Weatherwise, April to October is the best bet, but flights and hotels are cheaper between November and March.
