York Art Gallery presents William Etty

Date Posted: 21/06/2011

York Art Gallery is set to present a major new exhibition exploring the life and works of one of Britain’s most significant yet controversial artists. William Etty: Art and Controversy will run from 25th June to 22nd January.

Promoted as the first comprehensive reassessment of Etty’s art in more than 50 years, the exhibition aims to explore Etty’s equivocal status; from stalwart of the Royal Academy -elected to be an academician ahead of John Constable - to being exiled from the artistic elite because of what was seen as a ‘perverse’ passion for the voluptuousness of the female nude.

Exploring four key themes central to his artistic practice - Art and Controversy, Etty and the Masters, Etty and the Life Class, and Etty and Portraiture - visiting groups can view more than 100 works by Etty, from the sensitive and delicate studies he made in the life class, through to ambitious historical canvases.

York Art Gallery welcomes visiting groups and admission is free.
