Twopence to Cross the Mersey to return next autumn

Date Posted: 17/10/2015

Twopence to Cross the Mersey will return for a three-week run next autumn, following its successful tour across Merseyside earlier this year.

Based on Helen Forrester’s own childhood, Twopence to Cross the Mersey tells the story of her wealthy family being thrown into poverty during the Great Depression of the 1930s. It sees them uproot from their middle-class life in south west England and move to Liverpool to rebuild their lives.

The memoirs of Forrester’s youth, where she was left to look after her six younger siblings whilst her father searched unsuccessfully for work, was first published in 1974 and became a best-seller before being transferred to the stage.

The play, directed by Bob Eaton, will run at the newly refurbished Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool from 20th September.

Full cast details will be announced shortly.
