To be or knot to be in Warwickshire

Date Posted: 24/08/2011

A new exhibition at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage in Stratford-upon-Avon unravels the mystery of where William Shakespeare tied the knot. And Thereby Hangs A Tale is running from the 16th September until the 29th January, before going on tour to other major venues across the West Midlands.

Shakespeare’s 1582 wedding was a social drama: William, 18 years old, was below the age of consent, married Anne, eight years his senior and already pregnant with his child. Evidence for and against the five churches laying claim to the wedding are presented for visiting groups to make up their own minds, assisted by historical records, artefacts, and stories from the time.

Groups of 15 plus planning a visit to the Shakespeare Houses can take advantage of discounted rates, in addition to special interest talks and tours with after hours options also available.
