Theatreland coach park created in London’s West End

Providing a huge boost to the group travel trade, a new coach park created in the centre of London will provide 24 coach bays at the gateway to the West End.

Group theatre goers arriving by coach can pre-book parking at the new Kingsway bays, which will be in operation from 10am to 4pm, and 7pm to midnight at a cost of £4 per hour, with a maximum stay of four hours.

The coach bays have been created by remodelling existing kerb and road space at the base of Kingsway, creating 24 spaces within metres of the theatres on Drury Lane and the Strand.

The initiative aims to tackle the amount of coaches that park up on narrow streets in the city, and has been backed by theatres and the coach trade.

John Wales, chief executive of Encore Tickets and a Coach Tourism Council board member said: “We are delighted at the positioning of the new bays as this will further encourage coach operators to feature London theatre trips with so many theatres conveniently positioned around the corner.

“Having spoken recently with operators, they can now plan with confidence, issuing firm parking instructions for drivers, knowing the numbers of bays available. This means they can pick up from theatres in a timely manner preventing congestion and wasted waiting time.”

This news of the West End coach parking initiative will no doubt be welcome amongst group travel organisers planning London theatre trips. Over 20 per cent of theatre goers arrive in the West End by coach.
