Star-studded opening at Westfield Stratford City

Date Posted: 14/09/2011

The new Westfield Stratford City shopping centre opened yesterday to a rush of crowds and celebrity appearances in east London.

Said to be the largest urban shopping centre in Europe, the £1.8 billion retail destination was opened by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson before shoppers enjoyed a live performance from pop star Nicole Sherzinger (pictured)

Opened in time for next year’s London 2012 Games, Westfield Stratford City will act as a gateway to the Olympic Park. Groups heading to the new centre for some retail therapy will be able to visit new flagship stores from John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose. There are 250 shops and 70 places to dine, plus a 17-screen cinema.

Boris Johnson said: "Westfield Stratford City has already played, and will continue to play, a crucial role in the remarkable regeneration of east London. Thousands of jobs for Londoners, millions in investment and one of the best shopping destinations in the world are a fantastic legacy which has been delivered years earlier than would have been possible without the 2012 Games.”

Coach groups will have to be dropped off or you can use public transport with easy access by train or tube.
