Rotterdam in Holland has been named one of the top ten cities in the world for travellers according to Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2016 yearbook.

The book highlights the top ten countries, cities and regions to visit in 2016, and Rotterdam has plenty of new ideas to inspire group travel.

Street art

Witte de Withstraat has been described in the book as the ‘city’s coolest street’. Groups visiting can enjoy art displays at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, and shopping opportunities at famous department store GROOS.

The street also boasts exciting architecture, examples of which include the 390-metre wooden pedestrian bridge Luchtsingel and the city’s famous cube houses.

Tasty treats

Rotterdam is a city with more than 170 cultures living side by side and this is reflected in the choice of cuisines on offer.

For exotic street food, visit West-Kruiskade, or for something a little more sophisticated, make a booking at one of the city’s eight Michelin-starred restaurants, such as the experimental FG Food Labs.

Other foodie options include indoor food market the Markthal, or Uit je eigen stad, one of Europe’s largest urban farms.

New additions

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore The Timmerhuis, a post-war historical building behind the city hall, which is gaining a new annex which will be made up of open ‘pixels’ (square blocks).

Due to open in December, the construction is only in contact with the ground at two points, which will create the effect of a swaying cloud.

Additionally, the Museum Rotterdam will open in the Timmerhuis in January 2016.

The museum will tell the story of the city and its inhabitants, spanning more than 100 years and showcasing a collection of over 100,000 Rotterdam-related objects.
