Railfest 2012: Britain’s biggest rail celebration

Date Posted: 31/10/2011

Promoted as Britain’s biggest rail celebration, Railfest 2012 will take place from the 2nd to 10th June at York’s National Railway Museum.

The nine-day event will see a space the size of 11 football pitches showcasing more than 30 of the UK’s fastest, largest, strongest, first, last and oldest locomotives. Highlights of the record-breaking line-up include Mallard, Tornado, Mardy Monster, and the Flying Scotsman, which will be on display following its completed restoration.

Special-interest groups and rail enthusiasts can look forward to a host of railway-related activities, with the chance to get up close to the exhibits by climbing into the driver’s cab, take a ride behind working engines, and view miniature locomotive and toy train displays. There will also be hundreds of stalls, plus live music.

Steve Davies, director of the National Railway Museum, commented: “Our previous Railfest in 2004 celebrated the bicentenary of Britain’s railways and proved to be a huge success by attracting over 60,000 visitors. Next year we hope to top this by providing an even bigger and better event. We’re certain that groups of all ages will be well catered for and we look forward to making 2012 a year to remember at the National Railway Museum.”
