Photography and textiles exhibitions to open at The Bowes Museum

Two new exhibitions are set to open at The Bowes Museum in Country Durham this month; one focussing on photography, the other on textiles.

One man’s inspiration

Robert Mapplethorpe: The Magic in the Muse is a showcase of work by the American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Mapplethorpe is said to have been inspired by a wide range of sources, including musicians, artists, the famous and the unknown.

Running from 28th November until 24th April, the photographic exhibition of Mapplethorpe’s work will focus on where he found the inspiration for his pictures – many of which are of well-known individuals.

The exhibition will elaborate on three key themes, which are movement, celebrity and musicians, and forms part of Artist Rooms – a diverse collection of works held by the Tate and National Galleries of Scotland.

One woman’s dedication to textiles

Also opening on 28th November will be Quiltscapes & Quiltline by Pauline Burbidge, running until 10th April.

Burbidge is a renowned contemporary quilt maker and textile artist, and has showcased her work across the globe throughout a 38 year long career.

Her work has been purchased by many international museums and collectors, and this exhibition will feature newly developed textile landscapes.
