Look to the skies : stargazing in Northumberland

Date Posted: 05/12/2014

State-of-the-art stargazing equipment and stargazing evenings are available for amateur astronomers visiting Northumberland.

Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water & Forest Park is about to celebrate its first anniversary of becoming an International Dark Sky Park.

New facilities for stargazers visiting the park in 2015 include interpretation boards at Dark Sky Discovery Sites and visitor centres; shelters such as the Stonehaugh stargazing pavilion; a portable planetarium and a pool of high-quality stargazing equipment which will be made available to borrow.

The stargazing season in Northumberland runs from September through to April and the area will be getting a good early morning view of the eclipse of the Sun on 20th March.

The Kielder Observatory will be showcasing the occasion and astronomers will be out and about with professional solar gazing equipment enabling people to look at our own star in safety.

Groups can book a tailor-made stargazing evening with an ‘astro guide’, astronomer Ian Glendinning.
