L.P. Hartley’s 1953 novel The Go-Between has been adapted for the West End stage, and will run at the Apollo Theatre from 27th May until 15th October.
The Go-Between is a new musical directed by Roger Haines. The score is written by Richard Taylor, and the production has been adapted from the original novel by David Wood who is also the co-lyricist.
Synopsis
The Go-Between tells the story of a man called Leo Colston, a man facing up to his past. Audiences will observe Leo as he reminisces over a hot summer spent in Norfolk with the family of his school friend Marcus in their luxurious country home.
The young Leo finds himself acting as the go-between for the beautiful upper-class Marian and tenant-farmer Ted who are entangled in a forbidden secret love affair.
The Go-Between is described as a coming-of-age story, and portrays how childhood events can shape a future without those involved realizing.
Michael Crawford
The role of Leo will be played by Michael Crawford, best known for his title role in The Phantom of the Opera, and for playing the hapless Frank Spencer in the British sitcom, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.
Michael Crawford’s career spans four decades, and includes his performance in the hit show Barnum at the London Palladium, the role of Count Fosco in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman in White and the eponymous role in The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium.
He is a multi-Olivier and Tony-award winning star whose acting work encompasses theatre, television and film. He was also appointed an OBE in 1988.
