Kit Harington, best known for playing Jon Snow in HBO’s Game of Thrones series, will take the lead in the stage adaptation of Doctor Faustus in April.
The production, directed by Jamie Lloyd, will run at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London from 9th April until 4th June. It will be designed by Soutra Gilmour, with lighting by Jon Clark, and music and sound by Ben and Max Ringham.
Doctor Faustus, a tragedy play written by Christopher Marlowe, tells the story of a man who has studied all sciences and arts and finds nothing more in the world left to study.
Faustus turns to magic, selling his soul to the devil in return for 24 years of power and pleasure – with disastrous consequences.
Written in the late 1500s, its full title is The Tragical History of Dr Faustus.
A modern take
Two new acts by Irish playwright Colin Teevan will explore how Faustus becomes a world-famous conjuror in a celebrity-obsessed society – a modern take on the original script.
Teevan's darkly comic scenes replacing the extant middle acts (believed by some not to have been written by Marlowe at all) and dynamic stage illusions are set to create a fresh perspective on the 400 year old play.

Harington has played Jon Snow in Game of Thrones since 2011. On stage, he was in the original casts of War Horse (National Theatre) and Posh (Royal Court).
On returning to the stage, Kit Harington said: "I have been away from the theatre for six years, so the combination of Colin Teevan’s inventive version of Marlowe’s extraordinary play in the hands of the visionary director Jamie Lloyd all felt like the perfect reason to come back. Faustus’ journey is exhilarating and the idea of playing a magician – a showman – is hugely exciting."
