A new exhibition of colourful 1930s-style railway posters promoting the attractions of the Mid Cheshire Railway Line is due to be unveiled for the first time at the Lion Salt Works Museum.
Based in Cheshire, the museum will host the exhibition between 3rd August and 3rd September. The displays will be free and regular tours will take place.
About the posters
Produced by the Mid Cheshire Community Rail Partnership and designed by artist Nicky Thompson of Chester-based Lemondrop Creative, the posters are characterised by blocky vibrant colours and are intended to evoke the Golden Age of British travel.
They feature both general scenes of cities, such as Chester, Manchester and Stockport, while they also capture interesting sites near rail stops. For instance, Lostock Gralam features the Lion Salt Works Museum and Northwich’s stop is illustrated by the impressive ‘Cathedral of the Canals’, the Anderton Boat Lift.
Other posters include Delamere, Knutsford, Hale, Altrincham and Chester Zoo.
The exhibition is also intended to encourage holidaymakers in the north west and beyond to embrace the spirit of adventure and explore the sites of the region by rail.
About the museum
The Lion Salt Works Museum reopened in 2015 after a four-year £10 million restoration and tells the story of salt and its impact on the people, landscape and industry in the region and beyond.
It uses interactive displays including a sound and light show that recreates the billowing steam of open-pans, as well as a ‘subsiding house’ and an automation.
The site has free access to parking, a large industrial-themed play area, a butterfly garden, shop and café.

Groups are welcome to visit the Lion Salt Works and are advised to book in advance. For trips that include up to 36 people, groups can have a guided tour, while groups of more than 36 people can also opt for have a tailored tour.
