Funny Girl national tour announced for next year

Following its successful West End run, Funny Girl will embark on a national tour in February 2017.

The iconic musical is currently showing at the Savoy Theatre until October, which will be followed by a national tour from February 2017, showing at venues such as Kings Theatre Glasgow, Milton Keynes Theatre and Stoke Regent Theatre.

Funny Girl tells the story of Fanny Brice, who rises to fame as a Broadway star thanks to her vocal talents and comedic abilities.

The show focuses on the ups and downs of her journey from Brooklyn music hall to stage, and currently stars Natasha Barnes as Fanny Brice.

Natasha Barnes has performed in theatre shows such as American Idiot, The Boy Who Fell Into a Book and Spring Awakening.

Barnes has recently stepped into the role of Fanny Brice on the West End, following Sheridan Smith’s temporary departure from the role.

The producers of Funny Girl have announced that Sheridan Smith will return to the role in the London production no later than the week commencing 11th July.

The show is directed by Michael Mayer, whose West End credits include Spring Awakening, American Idiot and Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Chorography is by Lynne Page, whereas Sonia Friedman Productions, Scott Landis Productions, Chocolate Factory Productions, Dante Di Loreto and Micheal Harrison all produce.

Music is by Jule Styne, and lyrics are by Bob Merrill.

History of Funny Girl

Funny Girl helped bring singer and actress Barbra Streisand to fame in 1964, and introduced two of her signature songs, People and Don’t Rain on My Parade.

A film adaptation followed in 1968, again starring Barbra Streisand.

She went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance.
