Rail specialist, Ffestiniog Travel has unveiled details of its 2011 escorted Christmas market tours, designed to allow groups the chance the browse some of Europe’s lesser-known markets and explore the local area by train.

The four-day Three Countries Christmas Market itinerary departing on the 9th December takes in Belgium’s Liège and neighbouring Place du Marché; seven markets in Cologne plus the city’s famous Gothic cathedral backdrop; and Valkenburg.

Groups can also choose to visit the World Heritage city of Bamberg on the seven-day Christmas Market Bamberg departing on the 1st December. Famed for its nativity trail, groups will have the chance to visit a steam locomotive works in nearby Meiningen and a railway museum in Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg, before taking in Cologne’s markets on the return journey.

Finally for groups seeking to get away over the festive period, there’s A Viennese Christmas departing on the 22nd December. The six-night tour includes a journey along the Semmering Pass, reportedly the oldest mountain railway in Europe; a Mozart dinner at the Piaristen Keller - a converted monastery in Vienna; and a private tour of St Stephen’s Cathedral, Hofburg Palace, and the Ringstrasse.
