Dates confirmed for 2011 Oyster Festival

Date Posted: 11/04/2011

Groups can look forward to the 2011 Whitstable Oyster Festival, with dates now confirmed as the 23rd to 29th July.

Promoted as one of Kent’s most popular festivals, the event is structured around the local customs of the oyster fishing industry, combined with a host of family and arts entertainment, food and drink produce, and local heritage and history.

Festivities begin with the ‘Landing of the Oysters’, a colourful parade through the town, followed by street and seaside entertainment, dancing and music. Additional events include the raft race, the traditional mud tug, and an arts & craft market. Heritage displays later in the week include the ceremonial pageantry of the ‘Blessing of the Waters’.

Visiting groups can also look forward to heritage walks, talks and demonstrations; crab catching; oyster-eating competitions; stand-up comedy; open air theatre; as well as literature and arts events.
