Dartmoor whisky distillery to open in April

A new Dartmoor Whisky Distillery in Devon will open in April, with tours and tastings available for visitors.

The new distillery will include a still and a whisky heritage centre, plus a bar and bistro. It is being built in the old Bovey Tracey town hall on the edge of Dartmoor.

Dartmoor Whisky Distillery has taken on the custodianship of this historic building, and given a new purpose to it, whilst restoring, and maintaining its heritage.

In addition, the old police station next door will house a visitor’s arrival centre and a souvenir shop, whilst in the main hall there will be an operating still, the heritage centre and a café.

The new distillery will be open seven days a week from April (specific date to be confirmed), with tours every morning at 11am, and every afternoon at 3pm.

The whisky heritage centre will teach visitors about the craft of producing whisky, the heritage of the Dartmoor National Park, and the qualities that the granite geology brings to Dartmoor Whisky.

Tasting the whisky

Dartmoor water will be used to make the spirit and, once established, the malt will come from barley grown on the moor.

It will be a little while before visitors can taste the finished whisky, but at the end of each tour participants will be able to taste the ‘work in progress’ by sampling some of the spirit from the first barrels.

Groups will also get an inclination of how the distillery’s three barrel types are infusing different flavours into the spirit, plus be able to sample a range of liquors.
