Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty to return for nationwide tour

Date Posted: 10/03/2015

Matthew Bourne’s staging of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty is to begin a nationwide tour, opening at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth on 17th October.

The tour will also include an eight week Christmas season at Sadler’s Wells from 1st December to 25th January.

The story begins in 1890 when the fairy tale was first transformed into a ballet by Tchaikovsky and choreographer Marius Petipa. Progressing from the late 19th century, the audience follows the story’s heroine Aurora into the Edwardian era before she wakes from her century long slumber in the modern day: a world more mysterious than any fairy tale.

Bourne produces a haunting new scenario in a gothic tale for all ages as he creates a supernatural love story that even the passage of time itself cannot hinder.

Sleeping Beauty premiered in 2012, and was the fastest selling production in the New Adventures history, Bourne’s dance company.

The show completed Bourne’s trio of re-imagined Tchaikovsky ballet masterworks that started in 1992 with Nutcracker! and, in 1995, the international hit Swan Lake.
