Betty Blue Eyes to close in September

New British musical Betty Blue Eyes is to close early at the West End’s Novello Theatre following poor ticket sales.

The production, based on the 1984 Alan Bennett and Malcolm Mowbray film A Private Function, opened in March and had originally been booking until the end of January. The show will now end its West End run on the 24th September.

Producer Cameron Mackintosh commented: “It is very curious - after such amazing reviews and positive word of mouth, no-one knows the real reason why Betty couldn’t find a bigger audience. We have been consistently playing to just over 50 per cent but it just isn’t enough to cover the costs. Of course I am disappointed but I’m not despondent, I am enormously proud of Betty. I know that she will eventually have her day and another life.”
