Miranda Hart as Miss Hannigan

The musical of Annie will open in the West End this May, and will star comedian Miranda Hart as Miss Hannigan.

Previews of the show will start on 23rd May at the Piccadilly Theatre. Booking for Annie will open on 27th February, with the production initially running until 6th January 2018.

Comedy writer, actor and author, Miranda Hart, will be making her West End debut as the notorious Miss Hannigan. Further casting is yet to be announced.

Hart is best known for her BBC sitcom Miranda, which saw three series, as well as her role in BBC’s Call The Midwife. She has also performed her own live stand-up shows and written three books.

Annie: synopsis 

Annie is set in 1930s New York during The Great Depression. Annie is a confident orphan who lives a life of misery and torment at an orphanage run by spiteful Miss Hannigan. 

Annie’s luck changes when she is chosen to go and spend Christmas with billionaire Oliver Warbucks, who despite wanting a boy, grows to love Annie.

Miss Hannigan, meanwhile, hatches a plan to spoil Annie’s search for her true family.

The score includes well known songs such as It’s A Hard Knock Life, Tomorrow, and Easy Street, which also featured in the 1982 film which starred Carol Burnett and Albert Finney.

Annie will be directed by Nikolai Foster and produced by Michael Harrison and David Ian. Foster’s production arrives at the West End 40 years after the original Broadway production opened in 1977. 

Annie has a book by Thomas Meehan, which was adapted from the comic strip Little Orphan Annie, and music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin.
