A round-up of some of the places the GLT team have visited recently, from the Postal Museum to the Lake District.
Here at GLT HQ, we’re incredibly passionate about all things travel, and each constantly seeking out travel experiences that groups will enjoy. Here are just a few of the attractions we’ve been to over the past few weeks – all of which are group friendly.
The Postal Museum
Keeley Rodgers: I took a trip back in time on the much anticipated Mail Rail, part of the new Postal Museum in Farringdon, London. It was a bit of a squeeze on the train (the original designs were not intended for people) but a fascinating insight into the history of the mail system. Special group rates are available and it can be combined with a trip to the museum. Well worth a visit but book quick, it’s very popular.
Kittywake Canal Cruise
Sharon Yandell: I was lucky enough to go on board the wonderful Kittywake Canal Cruise with a group organised by Steve Reed Travel. The 56 feet long canal barge cruised the scenic waterways of Wigan and Leigh and we were looked after by owners Sandy and Steve who made the trip a real treat with interesting stories of the area.
A few guests including myself were fortunate enough to have a go opening and closing the lock. If your group are touring in Lancashire, I highly recommend a cruise on Kittywake who can cater for all your group’s needs.
Bletchley Park
Sue Fletcher: Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire was the central site for British codebreakers during World War Two, and it was on a recent visit that I was able to find out just why this heritage attraction has so much on offer to groups. You can explore the code breaking huts, discover exhibits in the museum, and step inside the mansion to see what the offices, library and wartime garages would have looked like. Plus, there are group rates for 12 or more people.
The Lake District
Rachel Bailey: In my opinion, there’s nowhere more beautiful to holiday than the Lake District, and despite a week of rain, I had a lovely break last month that consisted of walking, eating and reading. Walking groups especially will find so many trails to explore, ranging from short lakeside walks to day-long hill-top hikes. I’d recommend the nine mile hike up and over Cat Bells, which affords brilliant views of Derwent Water.
The Ritz
Emily Ansell Elfer: Said to be one of the most beautiful dining rooms in the world, complete with classical columns and frescoes, The Ritz restaurant was a real sight to behold and eating there felt like a really special occasion. My hen’s egg starter, roast duck and soufflé went down a treat, and the pre-lunch canapés were a nice surprise.
Not wanting to rush home, we also finished the day in style with a cocktail in the The Ritz’s Rivoli Bar. GTOs should call 020-7300 2507 for information about private dining.
