For the discerning gent, Malta has a lot more to offer than you might realise. We take a look at some masculine group travel pursuits in Malta, from playing Indiana Jones in Paola to enjoying the races at the Mdina Grand Prix.

Whether you're after a cultural break, an upmarket stag weekend or simply want to ensure you have plenty to do on your group holiday, find something to suit all tastes with these top ideas.

A World War Two history day

Visit the Lascaris War Rooms in Valletta, which are located in St James' Ditch, underneath the Upper Barracca Gardens.

A must-see for those interested in World War Two history, this is the secret bunker where the defence of Malta and later the invasion of Sicily were managed.

Having been faithfully restored using the original equipment; groups can now enjoy a guided tour costing ten euros which includes a ten minute film.

Visit underground burial chambers

For the adventurous man, Hal Saflieni Hypogeum in Paola offers the chance to feel like Indiana Jones for a day.

The World Heritage Site is a vast underground structure which dates back to around 2500BC and was used as a burial chamber in prehistoric times.

Visitors can explore the complex labyrinth of interconnecting chambers with domed vaulting, which is open daily with admission priced at €20 per person.

A day at the races

Time your visit to take in the Mdina Grand Prix which takes place each October, staged beneath the Bastions of Mdina which was once Malta's capital city.

The location, which has been used in films such as Gladiator and Troy, provides a great backdrop to the racing event, organised by the Valletta Grand Prix Foundation.

Rolex Middlesea Race

The three-day programme includes classic car displays, timed sprints, demonstration runs and various social gatherings, offering a fun-filled day out whether you’re a car fanatic or not.

Yacht racing across the ocean

For some coastal activities, opt to watch world-class yachts set sail in the Rolex Middle Sea Race, another annual event which departs from Valletta every October.

Groups can witness the exhilarating spectacle as more than 75 yachts leave the Grand Harbour in a race which follows a course past Sicily, the Aeolian Islands, the Egadi Islands, Pantelleria and the Lampedusa Islands, through the South Comino Channel to the finish line in Marsamxett Harbour.

Relax with a glass of wine

If you fancy something slightly less taxing, try some local wine sampling at the Marsovin Cellars in Marsa.

Originally built in the 17th century by the knights of St. John, the cellars are now home to 220 oak barrels being used to age the Marsovin Estate wines, produced with Maltese terroir.

GTOs can book a tour to learn about the methods used, and sample the wines in an enchanting setting.

And don’t forget accommodation – opt to stay at the Phoenicia Hotel, which has welcomed Hollywood icons from Charlton Heston and Oliver Reed to Pierce Brosnan and Brad Pitt. You'll be in prime position by the bastions of  the cosmopolitan capital city Valletta to enjoy the many attractions and events on offer.
